About Me:

  • Nico or Beckett, minor, he/him & it/its
  • not American
  • disabled and queer, and so are most of my OCs
  • horror, fantasy, and occasional sci-fi writer; mostly YA
  • i like to explore themes of corruption, hope, war, friendship, humanity, and healing. i also like angst!!! much of it!!!!
  • i have a disabled blog, @chroniccoolness, a book blog, @tobias-fell, and a fandom blog, @trans-michael-shelley
  • i do not want to interact with transphobes/radfems, other bigots, people with minors in their DNI, or harry potter blogs
  • i also do art sometimes

My Current Most Active WIPs:

  • “gay fairytale series” (placeholder title): a 5-book loose fairytale retelling. the first book follows five teenagers who have found out they are potential pawns to end the world, and must travel across kingdoms to a prestigious annual ball in order to kill the monarch that wants to use them in the first place. tags are #wip gfs, #wip gfw1, #wip gfw2, and the OC tags. (OCs: Angel, Bea, Hope, Oliver, Corey, Rowan, Tasya.)
  • “the other ones”: a half-epistolary standalone horror novel. three teens host a podcast about the supernatural that leads them to investigate the strange forest at the edge of town. they go in–only to exit hours later, covered in blood, unable to remember anything that happened, and with a new companion: the previously missing Keisha Carter, who warns of monsters coming just around the corner. Further investigation into the forest reveals a crueler side to everything… and everyone. Tags are #wip the other ones and the OC tags. (OCs: Astrophel, Elisa, Hyacinthus, Keisha.)

WIP tags for other less active WIPs you can also browse: “#wip nt21” (thriller about a private art school), “#wip val saintly” (urban fantasy about a girl who saved the world adjusting to her life afterward), “#wip oddities” (middle grade portal fantasy about bravery, friendship, and autism), “#wip gilded/rotten” (epic fantasy heist about people who would kill or die for each other, and what happens when one of them does both)

i'm going to say this because other disabled people deserve some warning, and it sure as hell wasn't given by any prerelease or review media i saw:

the new zelda game, 'tears of the kingdom' has a major trigger for medical abuse body horror front and centre from the very beginning, all throughout the game

at the very start of the game, link is injured, and then wakes up to be told that he has had someone else's dead arm grafted onto him, without consultation or consent, as a "necessity" to "save his life"

there is so much ableist subtext i could draw out from this, but importantly, if you have any triggers with forced or unwanted medical procedures done on you, go in prepared and bracing yourself

it's not a prosthesis, or gauntlets, or magitech infusion, it is literally textually a dead arm transplant done while unconscious, and the game's gaze lingers on and highlights it and its difference from his body constantly

i don't know how this was considered acceptable in a family friendly franchise, other than the sheer ignorance of the developers about disabled peoples' medical experiences

speaking of which, since i know i'm opening myself up to shit by even mentioning this is an issue, if you have to wonder why this is a trigger especially for disabled people and why i'm treating it with such gravity:

horrifying medical procedures done on us without consent that we're only told about after waking up is unfortunately routine for people with disabilities of many kinds

and forceful transplantation of an unwanted (or even unviable) limb against patient consent is absolutely a real world thing doctors actually do in the name of making a person "whole" and "fixed" and because disability is abhorrent to them. it's not a fictional or fantastical scenario, and i know this because it was done to me, and it was living hell that i will never recover from.

so if you want to argue about it with me or tell me "well actually it's ghost magic", or tell me about your headcanons, or be in denial about the horrors forced on us that you don't want to believe are real.... fucking don't.

already getting a lot of hate from people that don't seem to understand the very basic fact that real people who go outside and touch grass can still get their real medical trauma triggered by fictional depictions....

im going to pay a bunch of people who deal in clairvoyance and/or divination - psychics, oracles, numerologists, etc - to each predict the exact date, time, and manner of my death, with their answers being sealed away until my death, at which point all of their predictions are viewed and the executor of my will awards my great fortune to whoever got closest to the right answer

“but martin what if two or more of them tie for the closest answer” so glad you asked. if two are tied for first place, they play super smash bros and the winner gets my vast riches. if more than two, they play musical chairs and the winner gets my vast riches. unless of course they all tie bc they all give the exact correct answer, in which case my will stipulates that they split the inheritance and kiss each other sloppy style

a couple people have pointed out that any one of my chosen seers could give a prediction and then fulfill it themself by killing me. unfortunately for yall im operating under the assumption that a nonzero proportion of these folks will be actually endowed with powers of prophecy, which would squelch that plan pretty firmly when the sealed predictions are opened and at least one of them describes the crime in perfect detail. not only would the murderer not win the contest bc in order to avoid incriminating themself they would not make their prediction specific enough, but they would also still get caught immediately

i really think - contrary to a lot of booktok-esque writing advice - the average reader is absolutely okay with coming across things they don't understand in fiction. i know i've read and watched tons of things full of specialist jargon that went over my head but i was invested enough to understand the stakes, both for real-world subjects and in second world SFF - where it's inevitable! younger me read slightly older books that referenced celebrities relevant only really a decade or so before i was born, but i could vaguely guess who they were via context and it didn't impede on my enjoyment and engagement in any way. this sort of thing is a very common occurence to anyone who isn't american. i'm certain i'm not alone in saying it's far preferable to have a narrative voice overestimate your knowledge in something than have them spell it out for you. please never cut a word or a reference out of fear that most readers wouldn't 'get'

and frankly if you're someone who does insist on needing to understand everything i think you may need to return to the 5 finger rule

i actually think this is really important in the wake of discussions on #ownvoices and how unfortunately surface-level the call for diverse writers is - i can really see how the idea of making things universally understandable as such will, in practice, mean easy to consume for white/western/cishet etcetera.

my actual most toxic trait is that i earnestly believe with all my heart that i could survive truly horrific injury or stranding in the wilderness, withstand torture, fight and win against opponents twice my size and strength, or even return from death itself through sheer force of will and frothing primal rage, but when faced with minor inconveniences i instantly lose all self-discipline and ability to function

like girl how are you going to rise from the grave if you can't even rise out of bed in the morning 😭😭😭 be fr
